Among 51 sakthi peeths, Nilachal hill, Kamarup is regarded first and powerful. Saktha devotees gather there for their Bhakthi, fulfilling vows. Kamakhya is at the center of powerful saktha cult in India. It is situated in the North Eastern state of Assam, atop the Nilachal Hill. It is birth place of Dusa Maha vidya, Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala reside inside the main temple (Cave temple) whereas the other seven; Bhuvaneshwari, Bhagalamuhi, Kaali, Chinnamastha, Taara, Dhoomavathi, and Tripura Bairavi reside around the main temple. It is an important pilgrimage destination for general Hindu and especially for Tantric worshipers.
According to Kaalika Purana, Sati Devi became Maa Kamakya. Kamakhya Devi came into existence when Lord Shiva was carrying the corpse of his wife Sati, and her "yoni" (female genitalia) fell to the ground at the spot where the temple now stands. The temple is a natural cave with a spring. Down a flight of steps to the bowel of earth, is located a dark, mysterious chamber.
